| Eric: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to do basic math operations and discuss a discounted price. The conversation takes place at a jewelry shop. |

| Zeynep: How is this possible? There is a twenty percent discount on the necklace, and the earring-bracelet set is fifty percent off. Could you calculate it again? |
| Cashier: Right away. The necklace dropped from forty liras to thirty-two liras with a twenty percent discount. The earring-bracelet set went down to eighteen liras from thirty-six liras with fifty percent off. You are right, the total is fifty liras. I'm terribly sorry. |
| Zeynep: Not a problem. I will pay in cash. And pack the necklace as a present please. |

| Eric: Elif, are there a lot of sales in Turkey? |
| Elif: Yes, there are. There are several seasonal discounts, starting with the back-to-school season in fall, electronics sales usually continue until New Year's, and they are followed by special offers for early summer vacation bookings in the spring. |
| Eric: Are specific items discounted at certain times of the year? |
| Elif: Well, summer for example is the season for cheap produce; many households buy fruits for jams and vegetables for pickles which will be consumed during the upcoming winter. It is also the time for wedding discounts as many weddings are held in summer. Household appliances and even home mortgages are also commonly discounted. |
| Eric: How about clothes? |
| Elif: In general towards the end of each season, the previous season's clothes go on sale, with some items dropping to less than half of their original price. |
| Eric: What about bazaars? |
| Elif: In the bazaars or in small mom-and-pop shops it is possible to get cheaper products by haggling at any time of the year. |

| Eric: Let's have a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word is.. |
| Elif: toplam |
| Eric: meaning "total" |
| Elif: the verb toplamak meaning "to add" is the root of toplam. Be careful because "your total" cannot be translated as toplamınız. Instead, toplam borcunuz needs to be used when toplam acts as an adjective. |
| Eric: Can you give us an example using this word? |
| Elif: Sure. For example, you can say.. Tüm bunlar toplamda 100 (yüz) TL tuttu. |
| Eric: ..which means "All of these cost 100 TL in total." Okay, what's the next word? |
| Elif: Düşmek |
| Eric: meaning "to fall" |
| Elif: This verb can describe the change in a price that gets lower and is combined with numerals to give clear information. You can use a set phrase to refer to a price, as in X-den Y-ye düşmek |
| Eric: which means "to drop from X to Y" |
| Elif: for example, in the dialogue we have Kolye kırk liradan yüzde yirmi indirimle otuz ikiye düşmüş |
| Eric: Meaning “The price of the necklace drops from forty liras to thirty-two liras with the twenty percent discount.” |
| Elif: Düşmek is conjugated in the past tense with -mış form in this sentence since the action of dropping is being redone by the cashier. |
| Eric: Can you give us another example? |
| Elif: Sure. For example, you can say.. Kolyelerimiz 50 (elli) liradan yüzde 5 (beş) indirimle 47.5 (kırk yedi buçuk) liraya düştü. |
| Eric: .. which means "Our necklaces dropped from 50 liras to 47.5 liras with a 5 percent discount." |
| Elif: Also be prepared to hear this sentence in shops Fiyatlar düşüyor |
| Eric: meaning “The prices are falling”. Okay, now onto the lesson focus. |

| Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to do basic mathematical operations and discuss a discounted price. Let’s start by learning how to say basic mathematic calculations in Turkish. Elif, could you help us? |
| Elif: Sure, here are the four main operations, “plus” is artı, “minus” is eksi, “times” is çarpı, “divided by” is bölü. |
| Eric: How do you say “equals”? |
| Elif: that is eşittir, which literally is “it is equal to”. |
| Eric: Let’s give some examples. How do you say 9 + 11 = 20 in Turkish? |
| Elif: Dokuz artı on bir eşittir yirmi. |
| Eric: How do you say 30 - 2 = 28 in Turkish? |
| Elif: Otuz eksi iki eşittir yirmi sekiz. |
| Eric: 13 × 5 = 65? |
| Elif: On üç çarpı beş eşittir altmış beş. |
| Eric: 70 ÷ 7 = 10? |
| Elif: Yetmiş bölü yedi eşittir on. |
| Eric: Ok, now let’s take a look at how to read percentages. In the dialogue there were many percentages, what is the rule for reading them correctly? |
| Elif: Unlike English, the percentage sign is written before the number and is read as yüzde. So a percentage is written and read as Yüzde followed by the number. |
| Eric: So in Turkish writing, the percentages are written in the opposite way |
| Elif: Exactly. |
| Eric:Let’s give some examples. |
| Elif: Bahşiş olarak en fazla %10 (yüzde on) veririm. |
| Eric: Which means "I give at most 10% in tips." |
| Elif: Kazağı %70 (yüzde yetmiş) indirimle aldım. |
| Eric: "I got the sweater for 70% off." Ok, let’s get into more specifics and also see how to make requests to a cashier. |
| Elif: In the dialogue, Zeynep contests the final sum and the cashier calculates the total again: Kolye kırk liradan yüzde yirmi indirimle otuz ikiye düşmüş. Küpe-bilezik otuz altı liradan yüzde elli indirimle 18 (on sekiz) liraya düşmüş. |
| Eric: Which means "The price of the necklace drops from forty liras to thirty-two liras with the twenty percent discount. The earring-bracelet set went down to eighteen liras from thirty-six liras with the fifty percent off." In the translation we can see two different expressions, "to drop from X liras to Y liras" and "to go down to Z liras from Q liras" |
| Elif: both feature "from" and "to" in reverse order and there is only one Turkish translation for both expressions in this case: X’ten Y’ye düşmek |
| Eric: It is possible to reverse the order but the meaning of the sentence changes due to the stress put on the different word. |
| Elif: Let’s focus on the -ten... -ye form with two other examples - Ankara’dan İstanbul’a gittik. |
| Eric: "We went from Ankara to Istanbul." |
| Elif: İstanbul’a Ankara’dan gittik. |
| Eric: "We went to Istanbul from Ankara." |
| Elif: In the first sentence, the act of going to Istanbul is emphasized. In the second sentence, Ankara being the departure point is underlined. |
| Eric: This strong distinction stems from the fact that in a Turkish sentence, the closer a word gets to the verb, the more emphasized it becomes. |
| Elif: Therefore when you are requesting a sale calculation from a cashier, the meaning of İndirimi yüzde elliden hesaplayın and Yüzde elliden indirimi hesaplayın vary greatly |
| Eric: although the English translation is the same: "Calculate the discount from 50%." |
| Elif: The second sentence puts the stress on indirim as if it’s the main object that needs calculation, almost as if there are things that could be calculated. The first sentence emphasizes yüzde elliden, the percentage at which the discount is to be calculated. |
| Eric: The message is that there are other percentages, but 50% is the specific one requested. Ok, let’s wrap up this lesson by giving some sample sentences. |
| Elif: Yüzde beş indirimle on altı liraya aldım. |
| Eric: "I bought it for 16 TL with a 5% discount." |
| Elif: Size özel kampanyamızda 100 (yüz) liradan fazla alışverişlere 7 (yedi) puan hediye. |
| Eric: "With our special offer for you, you get 7 points for purchases above 100 TL. " |
| Elif: Kartla olan %10 (yüzde on)'luk indirime ek olarak bugüne özel %15 (yüzde on beş) indirim var. |
