Hello, and welcome to the Culture Class- Holidays in Turkey Series at TurkishClass101.com. In this series, we’re exploring the traditions behind Turkish holidays and observances. I’m Michael, and you're listening to Season 1, Lesson 20. International Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival. In Turkish, it’s called Uluslararası Altın Portakal Film Festivali.
Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival is the oldest and longest-running film festival in Turkey that is also followed closely by viewers from Europe and Asia. The festival has been held annually in Antalya since 1964.
In this lesson, you will learn about the Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival.
Now, before we get into more detail, do you know the answer to this question-
The Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival was postponed two years in a row. Do you know why and when?
If you don't already know, you’ll find out a bit later. Keep listening.
In the 1960s the city of Antalya in southwest Turkey sought to create a logo, and for that reason, the most important symbol of the region, the orange, or in Turkish portakal, was used to build a statue of Venus. The orange not only gives the festival its name, but also became the symbol of the awards for the film festival, and in this way Antalya was promoted globally.
The main purpose of this festival is to promote the Turkish cinema sector or Türk sinema sektörü, financially and spiritually, and also to encourage Turkish movie producers to produce good-quality films. This occasion also lays the groundwork for young and skilled actors to move on to world-famous productions and in return to promote Turkey. Within the scope of this festival program, there is an international competition where reputable and interesting European and Asian movies showcase their productions.
Throughout its history, the Golden Orange Film Festival witnessed several amusing scandals or skandallar, including those among actors and actresses, political appeals, disputes, and jealousies. From time to time, the film festival was actually shadowed by certain tabloid incidents.
The winners of the 44th Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival were announced on the Internet hours before the actual award ceremony. While this became a national fiasco, many actors who found out that they didn’t receive an award, lost their temper. Among them was Nurgül Yeşilçay who said that she would rather eat that orange than receive it as an award. Nevertheless one year later, she received her long-awaited award for her movie "Vicdan", meaning “Conscience”.
Now it's time to answer our quiz question-
The Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival was postponed for two years in a row. Do you know why and when?
In 1979, before the 16th Golden Orange Film Festival, the Censor Council or Sansür Kurulu banned two Turkish movies from taking part in the program, and for that reason producers protested the festival. Following this incident, Antalya Municipality postponed the festival until the next year. Coincidentally, the festival was postponed again in 1980 because of the military coup, or in Turkish askeri darbe, that was launched in the same year.
So listeners, how was this lesson? Did you learn anything interesting?
Does your country hold any international festivals? If so, what are they called?
