Selam arkadaşlar, ben Zehra. Hi everybody! I’m Zehra.
Welcome to TurkishClass101.com’s “3 dakikada Türkçe”. The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Turkish.
In the last lesson, we learned how to use Turkish adjectives.
In this lesson we will start a series of lessons dedicated to the most common verbs in Turkish!
The first verb in our series will be gitmek, which means "to go".
So imagine someone asks you Tatilde nereye gidiyorsun? That means "Where are you going for your holidays?" informally.
So if you are going to a ski resort for example you will say: Kayak yapmaya gidiyorum.
[slowly] Kayak yapmaya gidiyorum.
So let’s break down this sentence:
First we had:
kayak yapmaya
which is "To do ski"
the word kayak is ski and yapmak is “to do”. In Turkish, we sometimes add gitmek to nouns like “kayak” to make a verb phrase. So in this example we say ‘to do skiing’ instead of ‘to ski’.
And finally we have ‘gidiyorum’ which means I am going.
Altogether it is
Kayak yapmaya gidiyorum.
[slowly] Kayak yapmaya gidiyorum.
If we want to answer this question with another option we could say,
Maldivlere gidiyorum.
[slowly] Maldivlere gidiyorum.
This means “I am going to Maldives.”
If you notice there is an -e suffix at the end of the word Maldivler. This suffix changes the meaning to ‘to Maldives’. But depending on the word, in order to create the vowel harmony this suffix might be -a too.
Okula gidiyorum.
I am going to school.
[slowly] Okula gidiyorum.
Now it’s time for Zehra’s Insights
In Turkish, the vowel harmony is one of the most important rules. The suffixes might take different form according to the word that they are linked to. Generally the last vowel of the word determines this pairing.
So, in this lesson, we learned how to use the verb gitmek and to use correct link words with it to talk about your destination.
Next time we’ll learn another very useful verb, yapmak.
Do you know what this Turkish verb means?
I'll be waiting for you with the answer in the next 3 dakikada Türkçe lesson.
Görüşmek üzere!
