Selam arkadaşlar, ben Zehra. Hi everybody! I’m Zehra. |
Welcome to TurkishClass101.com’s “3 dakikada Türkçe”. The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Turkish. |
In the last lesson, we learned how to use the verb gitmek which means "to go" in Turkish. |
In this lesson, we will continue our series dedicated to common Turkish verbs. |
The second verb is yapmak, which means "to do." You’ll see that the meaning of this verb is quite broad and it can be found in many different situations. |
So, imagine someone asks you Ne yapıyorsun? |
That means "What are you doing?" informally. |
So if you are doing your homework, for example, you could say Ödev yapıyorum. |
So let’s break down this answer: |
First we had: |
Ödev which is "homework" |
Then yapıyorum which is “I am doing”. Let's take a closer look at this phrase. |
yap is the base form of “to do” |
if we add the -yor suffix to a verb it makes it present tense -- basically like adding “-ing” in English |
The final -um suffix represents the first person singular. |
Ödev yapıyorum. |
Note that in Turkish, you can use the present progressive to say that you are doing something right now. |
For example, if someone asks for help but you're busy cooking dinner, you can say Kusura bakma, yemek yapıyorum which literally means "Sorry, I am preparing the meal!" Here we are using the present progressive. |
So now, let’s have a broader look at what can you say with this verb yapmak in Turkish! |
It can mean "to prepare" as we saw just before, but it can also stand for "to practice," as in Pratik yapıyorum which is "I am doing practice." or "I am practicing." |
It can also replace a lot of other verbs, for example "to buy" as in Alışveriş yapıyorum, which is "I’m shopping." Or Temizlik yapıyorum which is "I’m cleaning." |
This verb can also express "to make" or "to create" in English, as in Kendi kıyafetlerimi yapıyorum which is "I make my own clothes." Also you can use it in Heykel yapıyorum for "I do sculpture." |
Now it’s time for Zehra’s Insights. |
In Turkish, we often say Bu akşam ne yapıyoruz? which means “What are we going to do tonight?” |
For example, if you are with some friends at night and you haven't decided your plans yet, you can ask this – it will sound very natural Bu akşam ne yapıyoruz? |
In this lesson, we learned how to use the verb yapmak. |
Next time we’ll learn another very useful verb, sevmek. |
Do you know what this word means? |
If not, I'll be waiting for you in the next 3 dakikada Türkçe lesson. |
Görüşmek üzere! |
