| In the last lesson, we learned how to use the verb yapmak which means "to do" in Turkish. |
| In this lesson, we will learn how to use sevmek, which is the third verb in our series dedicated to the most common Turkish verbs. |
| sevmek can mean both "to like" and "to love" in Turkish, so in this lesson we are going to see how to use it correctly. Let’s start! Hadi başlayalım |
| Imagine you are in a restaurant with your friend and he or she asks you – Peyniri sever misin? |
| This means "Do you like cheese?" in an informal way. |
| So supposing you like it, you can respond: Peynir çok severim. |
| So let’s break down this answer: |
| First we had: |
| Peynir, which means “cheese”. |
| Then we have çok which is “very”. Do you remember it from previous lessons? It would clear up whether the meaning is like or love. |
| After that we have severim, which is the 1st person form of the verb sevmek in the present indicative. |
| I love cheese. Peyniri çok severim. |
| Note that in Turkish we use the verb sevmek to express both that we "love" or "like" something or someone. |
| Even if you just appreciate something, you can use sevmek. But at the same time, it is also the verb to use when talking about the person you are in love with. |
| The strength of the verb sevmek often depends on the word that comes before it. For example, to say that you really love something or someone, you can add the word çok before severim and use the -i suffix on the word for the thing or person, as in |
| Bu filmi çok severim which is "I really like this movie". Here, using filmi instead of film is stronger and means you like it very much. |
| (slowly) Bu filmi çok severim |
| And of course, sevmek is above all the verb of love, so if you are talking to the person you fell in love with, you can tell them Seni seviyorum, which is "I love you" in Turkish! |
| Now it’s time for Zehra’s Insights. |
| If you want to use a softer verb than sevmek, you can use hoşlanmak which is "to like" or "to enjoy". So if you don't want to say Seni seviyorum, "I love you", you could just say Senden çok hoşlanıyorum. "I like you a lot." |
