Selam arkadaşlar, ben Zehra. Hi everybody! I’m Zehra. |
Welcome to TurkishClass101.com’s “3 dakikada Türkçe”. The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Turkish. |
In the last lesson, we learned how to use the verb gelmek. |
In this lesson, we will jump into our series dedicated to question words in Turkish. Our first one is the one most commonly used to ask a question: what. |
So imagine you are in Turkey with your friend and you see a street performer. You want to ask "What is he doing?" How would you do it? |
You will ask - O ne yapıyor? |
So let’s break down this question: |
O represents the third person singular |
Ne means “what” |
Yapıyor is the verb that we learned from previous lessons. Basically it means “is doing” |
So, all together it is O ne yapıyor? |
To say “What are you doing?” we just need to replace the subject and adjust the verb to match, so it becomes |
Sen ne yapıyorsun? |
As you can see, in Turkish, "What" is mainly translated as ne? |
If you want to sound even more formal, you can use yapıyorsunuz as in Siz ne yapıyorsunuz? That is the formal form for "What are you doing?" with Siz, which is the formal "you." |
You can use it if you are talking to an older or superior person in a working context. |
The rule is simple - each time you want to ask a question starting with "What" and followed by a transitive verb you have to use ne? in Turkish. |
For example with the transitive verb "to want", "What do you want" will be Ne yapmak istersin? |
Also with the transitive verb "to eat", it will be Ne yemek istersin? "What would you like to eat?" |
And if you want to ask somebody’s name very politely you can ask İsminiz nedir? "What is your name?" |
To ask about their job, say İşiniz nedir?, which means "What is your job?" |
Now it’s time for Zehra’s Insights. |
If you want to cook for your friends or partner, but cannot decide what to cook, Ne yemek istersiniz? can be a good question to ask – it means “what would you like to eat?” |
Once you learn this phrase it’s possible that you will hear it a lot in restaurants too. |
In this lesson, we learned how to translate the word "What" depending on the grammatical situation. |
Next lesson, we will talk about "Where" questions. |
I'll be waiting for you in the next 3 dakikada Türkçe lesson. |
Görüşmek üzere! |
