John: This is Must-Know Turkish Slang Words and Phrases, Season 1, Lesson 2. In this lesson, you'll learn army slang.
John: These are common among military men. Don't be surprised to hear these words when men are talking about their past military memories.
SLANG EXPRESSIONS
John: The expressions you will be learning in this lesson are:

Selin: Mehmet Bey
Selin: kara şimşek
John: Selin, what's our first expression?
Selin: torun
John: literally meaning "grandchild." But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "junior level conscript."

John: literally meaning "Sir Mehmet." In Turkey, soldiers are called
Selin: Mehmetçik
John: meaning "like young Mehmet" because it is believed that the military service has something to do with the prophet Muhammed. And Mehmet is the Turkish version of Muhammed. When it's used as a slang expression. it means "people who do short term mandatory military service."
