Turkish Survival Phrases, Lesson 11: Turkish restaurants. "How many people?"

Lesson focus

There is a wide variety of Turkish dishes, and your job as a visitor is to try as many different foods as possible. However, before you start eating, you have to get to the table! In this lesson, we'll cover getting to the table in a restaurant.
When entering a restaurant in Turkey, you will be greeted with Hoş geldiniz, which means "Welcome." Hoş gel-di-niz. Hoş geldiniz. Or you can hear Merhaba, which means "Hi" or "Hello." Mer-ha-ba. Merhaba.
When you enter a restaurant, or Restorant in Turkish, you'll usually be seated by a waiter or waitress. Often, you will be asked the question "How many people in your party?" So, practicing it will come in handy at some point. "How many people are you?" in Turkish is Kaç kişisiniz? Let's break it down. Kaç ki-şi-si-niz? Once more. Kaç kişisiniz?
The first word, Kaç, means "How many." Kaç. Kaç. After this comes Kişisiniz, a polite way to say "person." Ki-şi-si-niz. Kişisiniz.
Now, let's go over how to answer.
You might tell the waiter or waitress, Üç kişiyiz, which in English means "We are three people." Let's break it down. Üç ki-şi-yiz. Once again. Üç kişiyiz.
The first word, Üç, means "three." Üç. Üç. After this comes Kişiyiz, which is how you say "people" here. Ki-şi-yiz. Kişiyiz.
Let's have a look at some of the numbers you might need here, from two to five:
2 – iki. I-ki. Iki.
3 – üç. Üç. Üç.
4 – dört. Dört. Dört.
5 – beş. Beş. Beş.
If you are just one person, the proper answer is "I am alone," which in Turkish is Yalnızım. Let's break it down. Yal-nı-zım. Once more, Yalnızım.
