| In the last lesson, we learned how to get a table at a restaurant. But please know that because of the popularity of Turkish food, it can be difficult to get a seat, especially on the weekends. The best thing to do, without a doubt, is to make a reservation for the time you want to eat. |
| In this lesson, we'll cover making a reservation at a restaurant. |
| Normally, if you want to make a phone call to reserve a table for the evening, you would say, "I would like to make a reservation for tonight." Bu akşam için bir rezervasyon yaptırmak istiyorum. Let's break it down. Bu ak-şam i-çin bir re-zer-va-syon yap-tır-mak is-ti-yo-rum. Once more, Bu akşam için bir rezervasyon yaptırmak istiyorum. |
| The first two words, Bu akşam, mean "tonight." Literally, they mean "this night." Bu means "this," and Akşam means "night." Together, Bu akşam means "tonight." Bu ak-şam. Bu akşam . |
| Next is the word Için, which means "for" in English. So, "for tonight" is Bu akşam için. I-çin. Için. Now, the thing we want to make, Rezervasyon, which pretty clearly means "reservation." Bir rezervasyon means "a reservation." Re-zer-va-syon. Rezervasyon. Next, Yaptırmak means "to make." Yap-tır-mak. Yaptırmak. Last of all, Istiyorum means "I would like to." Is-ti-yo-rum. Istiyorum. |
| Normally, you'll be asked "How many people are in your party?" and "What time you'd like a table?" For "How many people?", Kaç kişilik? Let’s break it down. Kaç ki-şi-lik? Once more, Kaç kişilik? |
| Now, imagine you are a party of two. You'll answer in Turkish, "For two people, please." İki kişilik lütfen. İ-ki ki-şi-lik lüt-fen. İki kişilik lütfen. |
| Finally, let's see how they will ask you the time of your reservation. Saat kaçta? Let's break it down. Sa-at kaç-ta? Once more, Saat kaçta? |
| Now, let's answer the question! Let's imagine you want to reserve a table at 8 o'clock. "At 8 o'clock, please." In Turkish that's Saat sekizde lütfen. Let's break it down. Sa-at se-kiz-de lüt-fen. Saat sekizde lütfen. |
| First, we have Saat, which means "time" or "o'clock." Sa-at. Saat. Then, we have Sekizde, which means "at eight." Se-kiz-de. Sekizde. We follow this with Lütfen, which you'll remember is "please." Lütfen. Lütfen. |
| The whole phrase, once again, Saat sekizde lütfen. Sa-at se-kiz-de lüt-fen. Saat sekizde lütfen. |
