Turkish Survival Phrases, Lesson 13: Turkish restaurants. Smoking or non-smoking. |
Lesson focus
|
In the last lesson, we learned how to make a reservation in a restaurant. Now that you know how to get a table, you have another big issue to tackle. If you want to enjoy your meal, the smoking issue is very important. If you are a smoker in a non-smoking establishment or a non-smoker in a smoking establishment, this could ruin your meal. |
In this lesson, we will cover how to ask for a smoking or non-smoking table. |
Let's imagine first that you are a smoker. Before entering a restaurant, you need to ask, "Excuse me, is smoking allowed here?" Afedersiniz, burada sigara içiliyor mu? Let's break it down. A-fe-der-si-niz, bu-ra-da si-ga-ra i-çi-li-yor mu? Once more. Afedersiniz, burada sigara içiliyor mu? |
Afedersiniz, as we have seen, means "Excuse me." A-fe-der-si-niz. Afedersiniz. We follow this with Burada, which means "in here." Bu-ra-da. Burada. And then, with Sigara, which means "cigarette." Si-ga-ra. Sigara. Next, we have Içiliyor. This word usually means "to drink," but with Sigara, it means "to smoke." I-çi-li-yor. Içiliyor. Last is Mu, which makes the sentence a question. |
Here's the whole sentence: Afedersiniz, burada sigara içiliyor mu? A-fe-der-si-niz, bu-ra-da si-ga-ra i-çi-li-yor mu? |
The answer to this question is very simple: Evet, içiliyor. "Yes, you can smoke." or Hayır, içilmiyor. "No. No smoking." |
Let's break those down. E-vet, i-çi-li-yor. Ha-yır, i-çil-mi-yor. |
If the answer is, "You are not allowed to smoke here," the expression "I'm sorry" often comes before the negative answer. Kusura bakmayın. |
Another way of asking is Afedersiniz, burada sigara içmek yasak mı? This literally means, "Excuse me, is smoking prohibited in here?" You might want to ask it while pointing at specific tables or areas at the restaurant. |
Let's break it down. A-fe-der-si-niz, bu-ra-da si-ga-ra iç-mek ya-sak mu? Once more at natural speed, Afedersiniz, burada sigara içmek yasak mu? |
Burada, you'll remember, means "in here." Sigara içmek literally means "to drink a cigarette," but that's how we say "smoke a cigarette" in Turkish. Si-ga-ra iç-mek. Sigara içmek. Yasak means "forbidden." Ya-sak. Yasak. And the Mu at the end makes it a question. |
The whole question is: Afedersiniz burada sigara içmek yasak mu? A-fe-der-si-niz, bu-ra-da si-ga-ra iç-mek ya-sak mu? Once more. Afedersiniz burada sigara içmek yasak mu? |
On some signs, you will see the phrase Sigara içmek yasaktır. This means "Smoking cigarettes is prohibited," and you'll see it beside the familiar image of a cigarette inside a cancel sign. |
Now, let's go over the possible answers to that question, "Is smoking prohibited in here?" If it's a positive answer, you might hear Evet yasaktır. |
All we did was add the Turkish word for "yes," Evet, in front of the sentence. Because the question has a negative meaning, we're asking whether smoking is prohibited, a "yes" answer will mean, "Yes, it is prohibited": Evet, yasaktır. |
If what you're pointing at is a non-smoking table, you'll hear Hayır, yasak değildir. Let's break that down. Ha-yır. If what you're pointing at is a smoking table, you'll hear Hayır, yasak değildir. Let's break that down. Ha-yır. ya-sak de-ğil-dir. |
The first word, Hayır, means "no." Ha-yır. Hayır. The second word, Yasak, still means "forbidden." Ya-sak. Yasak. The third word, Değildir, means "it isn't." De-ğil-dir. Değildir. |
All together, it's Hayır, yasak değildir. Hayır, yasak değildir. |
