| In the last lesson, we learned how to get a waiter's attention and order food and drinks at a restaurant. Once you have the beverages and entrées you ordered, you can enjoy the mouthwatering meal. |
| Normally, when the waiter sees that you have finished, he will come to your table and kindly ask, "Would you like anything else?" In Turkish, this is Başka bir şey ister misiniz? Let's break that down. Baş-ka bir şey is-ter mi-si-niz? Once again, Başka bir şey ister misiniz? |
| İster misiniz means "Would you like." Is-ter mi-si-niz. İster misiniz. In here, Başka means "else," and Bir şey means "something," So, the phrase Başka bir şey means "anything else." Baş-ka bir şey. Başka bir şey. İster misiniz means "Would you like." Is-ter mi-si-niz. İster misiniz. |
| You are sure to hear this from waiters in restaurants or cafés. If you review the whole sentence, it is Başka bir şey ister misiniz? |
| Unless you're still hungry, very unlikely after a Turkish meal, you can say, "No, thanks": Hayır, teşekkürler. Ha-yır, te-şek-kür-ler. |
| You may recall that Hayır means "no" and Teşekkürler means "thanks." Once again, Hayır, teşekkürler. |
| In Turkey, it is customary for waiters to ask if you want coffee or tea at the end of the meal. No doubt, you'll hear Kahve yada çay alır mısınız? which means something like, "Would you like to have coffee or tea?" |
| Let's break it down. Kah-ve ya-da çay a-lır mı-sı-nız? And again, at natural speed, Kahve yada çay alır mısınız? |
| You can probably tell that Kahve means "coffee." Kah-ve. Kahve. The second word, Yada, means "or." Ya-da. Yada. Next is Çay, the Turkish word for "tea." Çay. Çay. Then, we have Alır, meaning "to have" or "take." A-lır. Alır. Last is Mısınız, a polite way to make a question. Mı-sı-nız. Mısınız. Alır mısınız has the same meaning as Ister misiniz, which is "would you like." But, Alır mısınız is often used when something is offered for free. As we said at the previous lesson, tea or coffee is often offered for free at the end of a meal at a Turkish restaurant. |
| All together, the question is Kahve yada çay alır mısınız? |
| If you prefer coffee, answer Kahve, lütfen. Kah-ve, lüt-fen. Kahve, lütfen. |
| Or if you want tea, just say Çay, lütfen. Çay, lüt-fen. Çay, lütfen. |
| When you're ready to leave, you'll want to ask for the check. In Turkish this is Hesap, lütfen. Let's break it down. He-sap, lüt-fen. And, once more. Hesap, lütfen. |
| The first word, Hesap, means "bill." And by now, you're no stranger to Lütfen, "please." |
| Here's the whole sentence: Hesap, lütfen. He-sap, lüt-fen. Hesap, lütfen. |
| And now, you're ready to go! |
