Lesson focus

Turkish Survival Phrases, Lesson 18: "How much?" in Turkish.
Now, it's time for some useful Survival Phrases for when you have time to shop in Turkish stores.
You should remember that Afedersiniz or Pardon, both meaning "Excuse me," is the first thing to say to a shop clerk. After that, you should say, "How much is this?" In Turkish, that's Bu ne kadar? Let's break it down: Bu ne ka-dar? Once more, Bu ne kadar?
Bu, as we've seen before, means "this." Ne kadar? means "How much?" Ne ka-dar? Ne kadar?
The whole question is Bu ne kadar?
Imagine that you find a clothing stand in a local market and want to buy a coat. After saying Afedersiniz or Pardon to get the stall keeper's attention, you can ask Afedersiniz, bu ceket ne kadar? Let's break it down: A-fe-der-si-niz, bu ce-ket ne ka-dar? And again, in natural speed, Afedersiniz, bu ceket ne kadar?
First comes Bu, which is "this." After this, comes the word Ceket meaning "coat." Ce-ket. Ceket. We already know ne Kadar, "how much."
The whole question is Afedersiniz, bu ceket ne kadar?
The last construction of this lesson is another common way to ask the price in Turkish. Kaç para? Let's break it down: Kaç pa-ra? Once more, Kaç para?
Kaç means "how much." Kaç. Kaç. Para means "money" in a general sense. Pa-ra. Para.
So Kaç para? literally means "How much money?"
Bu ceket kaç para? means "How much money is this coat?"
First, we have Bu, which, as we've seen is "this." Next is Ceket, or "coat," and the phrase Kac para.
Altogether, that's Bu ceket kaç para? Bu ce-ket kaç pa-ra? Bu ceket kaç para?
