Turkish Survival Phrases, Lesson 24: Riding the Turkish bus. "What is the next stop?" |
In the previous lesson, we learned how to ask how long the bus trip to your destination will take. |
You'll probably want to know where your bus is going before you get on it. Or, you may find yourself wondering whether the bus you're already on will stop where you hope it will. Either way, you'll want to be able to ask "Does this bus go to... ?" Bu otobüs, destination plus –e, gider mi? |
Just fill in the blank with whatever place you're going to. Let's try with Turkey's big tourist destination and old town, Sultanahmet. Bu otobüs Sultanahmet'e gider mi? Let's break it down: Bu o-to-büs Sul-ta-nah-me-t'e gi-der mi? And again, at natural speed, Bu otobüs Sultanahmet'e gider mi? |
The first word is Bu, which we know means "this." Next comes Otobüs, obviously it's "bus." Then the place where you want to go. In this case, it's Sultanahmet. You need to add -e to get Sultanahmet'e, which you can remember from previous lesson, it means "to Sultanahmet." The word after that, Gider, means "goes." Finally, you'll recall that the Mi at the end makes it a question. |
Put it all together and we get Bu otobüs Sultanahmet'e gider mi? "Does this bus go to Sultanahmet?" |
You may also want to ask what the next stop is. Sonraki durak nedir? Let's break it down: Son-ra-ki du-rak ne-dir? And, once more, Sonraki durak nedir? |
Sonraki means "next." Durak means "stop" or "station." Ne means "which" or "what." So, Nedir means "is which one." |
Altogether, that's Sonraki durak nedir? |
As an answer, you might get Sonraki durak Sultanahmet. |
Get ready to hop off if you hear this, for it means "The next stop is Sultanahmet." |
