Turkish Survival Phrases, Lesson 28: Taking a taxi in Turkey. |
In this lesson you'll learn how to get to places by taxi. Imagine you want to go to Taksim, an important place in Istanbul. |
In Turkish, "To Taksim, please" is Taksim'e, lütfen. Let's break it down: Tak-si-m'e, lüt-fen. And once more, Taksim'e, lütfen. Just stick -e , which means "to," on the end your destination. This is the simplest, easiest way to say where you want to go. |
Of course, it's good to have more than one option! |
You can also say, "Let's go to Taksim." Taksim'e gidelim, lütfen. Let's break it down: Tak-si-m'e gi-de-lim, lüt-fen. And again, Taksim'e gidelim, lütfen. |
The first word, Taksim'e, means "to Taksim." This is followed by Gidelim, which means "let's go" or "we shall go." Finally, the familiar Lütfen, "please." Taksim'e gidelim, lütfen. |
When you want to get off, you can say, "Here, please." Burası, lütfen. Just say these words and the driver will stop. Bu-ra-sı, lüt-fen. Burası, lütfen. |
Burası, as we've seen, means "here." Bu-ra-sı. Burası, Once more, all together, that's Burası, lütfen. Burası, lütfen. |
It could also be nice to add "thank you" after the driver stops. Teşekkürler. |
If you want to be really specific about it, you can say Burada duralım lütfen, which means "We'll stop here, please." Bu-ra-da du-ra-lım, lüt-fen. Burada duralım lütfen. |
Burada means "in here." Bu-ra-da. Burada. Duralim means "we shall stop." Du-ra-lim. Duralim. |
Altogether, that's Burada duralım, lütfen. |
When it's time to pay, you may want to know Kredi kartı ile ödeyebilir miyim? "Can I pay by credit card?" |
Since most Turkish taxis don't accept credit cards, it helps to ask before you get in. Kredi kartı ile ödeyebilir miyim? Let's break it down: Kre-di kar-tı i-le ö-de-ye-bi-lir mi-yim? Again, at natural speed, Kredi kartı ile ödeyebilir miyim? |
The first words, Kredi kartı, means "credit card." Kre-di kar-tı. Kredi kartı. Next, add Ile and you get "by credit card." I-le. Ile. Altogether, we have Kredi kartı ile, "by credit card." The next word, Ödeyebilir, means "can pay." Ö-de-ye-bi-lir. Ödeyebilir. And, to make it a question about ourselves, we add Miyim at the end. Mi-yim. Miyim. |
The entire question is Kre-di kar-tı i-le ö-de-ye-bi-lir mi-yim? Kredi kartı ile ödeyebilir miyim? |
