Turkish Survival Phrases, Lesson 33: "May I take your picture?" in Turkish. |
How many times have you been on a trip with your camera, trying to immortalize an epic moment? In Turkey, there are so many landscapes and people to tempt your camera that you won't put it away! I know you don't want to jeopardize your marvelous album in Turkey. That's why we'll be devoting this lesson to more photo phrases. |
In the last lesson, we learned how to ask someone to take your picture. Fotoğrafımı çeker misiniz? |
But, what if you want to take someone else's picture? Turkish people are certainly interesting enough! |
"Can I take your picture?" in Turkish is Fotoğrafınızı çekebilir miyim? Let's break it down: Fo-to-ğra-fı-nı-zı çe-ke-bi-lir mi-yim? Once more, Fotoğrafınızı çekebilir miyim? |
The first word, Fotoğrafınızı, means "your photo." Fo-to-ğra-fı-nı-zı. Fotoğrafınızı. |
This is a pretty polite way to say "your photo." Next comes Çekebilir, which means "can take." Çe-ke-bi-lir. Çekebilir. Last is Miyim, which you probably recall turns the sentence into a question. Mi-yim. Miyim. |
The whole request is Fotoğrafınızı çekebilir miyim? Fotoğrafınızı çekebilir miyim? |
In situations that don't call for politeness, such as if you're asking to take a young person's photo, you can ask Fotoğrafını çekebilir miyim? Fo-to-ğra-fı-nı çe-ke-bi-lir mi-yim? Fotoğrafını çekebilir miyim? |
The only thing we changed was the end of the word for "your photo." We made it Fotoğrafını. Fo-to-ğra-fı-nı. Fotoğrafını. |
That more casual question was Fotoğrafını çekebilir miyim? |
Other situations where you will need permission to snap are museums, art galleries, and shops. "Can I take a picture in here?" in Turkish is Burda fotoğraf çekebilir miyim? Let's break it down: Bur-da fo-to-ğraf çe-ke-bi-lir mi-yim? And once again, Burda fotoğraf çekebilir miyim? |
The first word, Burda, means "in this place." Bur-da. Burda. The second word, Fotoğraf, we know very well by now. We also know that Çekebilir means "I can take." And that Miyim turns it into a question. |
So, the whole request is Burda fotoğraf çekebilir miyim? Burda fotoğraf çekebilir miyim? |
