| In this lesson, because we don't want you to be caught off guard in any kind of situation in Turkey, we are going to introduce a new phrase that is very important to help you focus your skills, not on the sounds, but on the writing. So, let's start this new lesson. |
| In Turkish, "Can you write it down, please?" is Yazabilir misiniz lütfen? Let's break it down: Ya-za-bi-lir mi-si-niz lüt-fen? Once more, Yazabilir misiniz lütfen? |
| The first word, Yazabilir, means "can write." Ya-za-bi-lir. Yazabilir. Next, we have Misiniz, which converts the sentence to a formal question. Mi-si-niz. Misiniz. Lütfen is "please," as you can remember from previous lessons. |
| All together: Yazabilir misiniz lütfen? Literally, this means, "Can you write it down, please?" |
| Next, we have another way to express the same meaning, Buraya yazabilir misiniz lütfen? "Could you write it down in here please?' |
| Let's break it down: Bu-ra-ya ya-za-bi-lir mi-si-niz lüt-fen? Once more, Buraya yazabilir misiniz lütfen? |
| The only extra thing in this sentence ıs the word Buraya, which is 'in here' in English. Bu-ra-ya. Buraya. |
| All together, we have Buraya yazabilir misiniz lütfen? Buraya yazabilir misiniz lütfen? |
| Once you have the written words, you may find that you have no idea how to pronounce them. In Turkish, "How do you pronounce this?" is Bu nasıl okunuyor? Let's break it down: Bu na-sıl o-ku-nu-yor? Once more, Bu nasıl okunuyor? |
| The first word, Bu, means "this" You should all be familiar with this by now. Next, we have Nasıl, which means "how," as we have seen before. Finally, you have Okunuyor, "is pronounced." Literally, this means "would be read." O-ku-nu-yor. Okunuyor. |
| The entire sentence again: Bu na-sıl o-ku-nu-yor? Bu nasıl okunuyor? |
| It might happen that people are not carrying a piece of paper or a pen. So, before asking Yazabilir misiniz lütfen? try asking Kalem ve kağıdınız var mı? "Do you have paper and pencil?" Let's break it down: Ka-lem ve ka-ğı-dı-nız var mı? Once more, Kalem ve kağıdınız var mı? |
| The first word, Kalem, means "pen" or "pencil." Ka-lem. Kalem. Then you have Ve, which in English is "and." Ve. Ve. Then, you have Kağıdınız, "paper," or literally translated as "your paper." Ka-ğı-dı-nız. Kağıdınız. And finally, Var mı, "is there" or "do you have." Var mı. Var mı. |

| As usual, before asking about someone else's stationery supplies, it's a good idea to say "excuse me," Afedersiniz, at the beginning of the sentence. |
