Lesson focus

Survival Phrases, Lesson 36: Read Turkish instantly. No knowledge of Turkish required.
In the previous lessons, we introduced you to some phrases you can use when in Turkey and this is the last lesson of the series dedicated to learning from the people around you. In this lesson, we are going to cover "How do you read this?"
In Turkish, "How do you read this?" is Bunu nasıl okuyorsunuz? Let's break it down: Bu-nu na-sıl o-ku-yor-su-nuz? Once more, Bunu nasıl okuyorsunuz?
The first word, Bunu, means "this one." Bunu. Bunu. Next we have Nasıl, in English "how." Na-sıl. Nasıl. Then, we have the verb Okuyorsunuz, "is read." O-ku-yor-su-nuz. Okuyorsunuz.
The entire sentence again is Bunu nasıl okuyorsunuz? Bunu nasıl okuyorsunuz?
If you are pointing at something, probably a book, a newspaper, or simply a street sign, you might also like to ask, "How do you pronounce this?" Bu nasıl okunuyor?
Bu again means "this." Bu. Bu. Nasıl means "how." Na-sıl. Nasıl. Okunuyor is "is pronounced." So, it can mean "to be read." O-ku-yor-su-nuz. Okuyorsunuz.
Let's break that question down: Bu na-sıl o-ku-nu-yor? Once more, Bu nasıl okunuyor?
Another way of asking the same question is Bu nasıl söyleniyor? which means "How do you say this?" The sentence construction is exactly same with above. We only change the word and replace it with Söyleniyor, which means "would be said." Söy-le-ni-yor. Söyleniyor.
Bu nasıl söyleniyor? Bu na-sıl söy-le-ni-yor?
After you have learned the reading and the pronunciation, you will probably want to know the meaning. So, why don't you try to ask? Anlamı nedir? "What does it mean?"
Let's break it down: An-la-mı ne-dir? Once again, Anlamı nedir?
The first word, Anlamı, means "its meaning." An-la-mı. Anlamı. Next, we have Nedir, meaning "what is" in English. Ne-dir. Nedir.
All together, we have Anlamı nedir? or "What does it mean?"
