Turkish Survival Phrases, Lesson 5: Turkish parting greetings. |
Lesson focus
|
In this lesson, we'll introduce parting greetings. |
A parting expression that we can use any time of the day to strangers or friends is Güle güle, which literally means "Leave while smiling." I know it sounds funny, but partings generally contain a bit of sadness, so this expression tries to make up for that. You can think of it as a Turkish version of "bye-bye." |
Let's break it down. Gü-le gü-le. Once more, Güle güle. |
You can also say Görüşürüz, which literally means "See you later." Let's break it down, Gö-rü-şü-rüz. Görüşürüz. |
This is a form of the Turkish word that means "to see." It's used with people we know and will possibly see again. Görüşürüz. |
Another similar form is Bay bay, which is "bye-bye" in English. It is used the same way in Turkish as in English. Bay bay. Bay bay. Bay bay. |
Put it with Görüşürüz and you get "Bye bye. See you soon." Let's break it down. Bay bay, gö-rü-şü-rüz. And once more, Bay bay. Görüşürüz |
When we say "Goodbye," a more formal expression is Görüşmek üzere. This literally means "Until I see you." Let's break it down, Gö-rüş-mek ü-ze-re. Once more, Görüşmek üzere. |
The first word, Görüşmek, is form of the verb for "to see." Gö-rüş-mek. Görüşmek. The next word, Üzere, means "until then." Ü-ze-re. Üzere. |
All together, that's Görüşmek üzere. Görüşmek üzere. |
This is used mostly with people we don't know or don't have a close relationship with. |
Outro
|
Okay, to close out today's lesson, we would you to practice what you have just learned. I will provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you're responsible for shouting it aloud. You have a few seconds before I give you the answer. So, Iyi şanslar, which means "good luck" in Turkish. |

Comments
HideIf you were in a taxi in Turkey, how would you say "goodbye" to the taxi driver before leaving the taxi?
Marketa merhaba
Güle güle is OK but "tekrar görüşürüz" is not. Because it means "we will see each other again" which generally doesn't work with taxi driver.
You can also say "iyi günler", "iyi akşamlar"

For the driveri would say : bay bay or güle güle
Merhaba,
Çok teşekkür ederim 😉
Görüşmek üzere.
Hi Ernst
It is still used but it is an old saying so you won't be hearing it that often. Moreover it is quite hard to pronounce for people trying to learn Turkish 😄 "Allah'a ısmarladık" is a mouthful!

😄 o.k. alashirmaladik is not mentioned, the the counterpart of güle-güle. You did not mention it because it is only to be used by muslim people?t
Hi Saad
Saying "İyi akşamlar/günler" instead of "tekrar görüşürüz" would be better, unless you are a frequent customer of that particular driver. In that case, it is perfect!
