Hey guys, this is Selin and welcome to Turkish Weekly Words. So, what is today’s topic? I don’t know as well. Let’s find out together. |
Flavors, Tatlar. Tat means flavor and flavors is Tatlar. |
1. tuzlu "salty" |
They say like Turkish foods are kind of salty. I think that’s true. Then, let’s say, Turkish foods are salty. |
Genelde Türk yemekleri tuzludur. "Usually, Turkish foods are salty." |
2. tatlı "sweet" |
Ah, it’s my favorite flavor. Sweet, tatlı. For dessert, we also say tatlı and like in English, we say, Oh, he is a really sweet guy, like that, right? We use the same word tatlı. |
O çok tatlı biri "He is a really sweet guy." |
Well, as a flavor, the most famous Turkish dessert is Baklava. |
Baklava çok tatlıdır. "Baklava is very sweet." |
3. acı "bitter/hot/spicy" |
Well, we can use acı for all of them actually but we have some other words too for different situations. |
For example, we have baharatlı for "spicy"; acı also means “spicy”. So what is the difference? If you say, oh, it’s like acı then, I understand that it’s very, very hot. Like oh, very hot, I cannot eat like hot pepper or like something that you know, you cannot eat; but if you say baharatlı instead of acı, then I am going to think, oh, it’s like spicy but not like you cannot eat, like, you can eat, like, it’s just the level of spiciness is normal. |
Oh, have you ever tried Çiğ köfte. It’s like a Turkish meal and if you are kind of interested in Turkish culture, I am sure you heard before and it’s very, very hot. Very hot but it depends on how much paprika or hot pepper you put but usually they put so much. |
“Çiğ köfte is very, very hot Turkish food.” Çiğ köfte çok acı bir Türk yemeğidir. |
Bitter çikolata / Acı çikolata - "Bitter chocolate" |
And bitter, for example, we have bitter chocolate right? Turkish people can say, Acı çikolata. |
Some people are using “bitter” instead of acı but both are okay. |
4. ekşi "sour" |
Okay. What is sour? I think the first thing that comes to my mind is Lemon. |
Limon ekşidir. "Lemon is sour." |
5. lezzetli "tasty" |
Lezzetli means like taste, flavor. Lezzet or tat, actually, are the same. So if you add L and I at the end of the word, then it becomes tasty. Lezzetli and if you want to say, oh this food is really tasty, I like it like that, then you should say, |
Aa çok lezzetli. "Oh, this food is really tasty." |
Do you know that we do like that in Turkish? |
This means like, oh, very nice, very tasty, çok lezzetli. |
